Robert Swan Obituary, Death – Robert Swan, an actor who appeared in “Hoosiers,” “Rudy,” and “The Babe,” Passes Away at the Age of 78 The actor, who was born in Chicago, has also made appearances in the films “Somewhere in Time,” “Natural Born Killers,” “The Untouchables,” and “Backdraft.” Robert Swan, a veteran character actor who had pivotal roles in several of the most famous sports movies ever made, including Hoosiers, Rudy, and The Babe, passed away recently. His age was 78.

Swan later worked with Hoosiers director David Anspaugh again to portray a priest in Rudy (1993), another famous underdog sports movie starring Sean Astin. Rudy was directed by David Anspaugh. Between those two films, he appeared in Arthur Hiller’s The Babe (1992), which starred John Goodman, as George Herman Ruth Sr., the father of New York Yankees hitter George Herman Ruth.

Swan was born in Chicago on October 20, 1944, and during his childhood, he performed at the Church of St. Paul & the Redeemer in Hyde Park as well as with the choruses of the Lyric Opera and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He also performed as an actor in local theaters before making it on Broadway in 1974 with the play The Freedom of the City. Somewhere in Time (1980), which was his debut picture, featured him as a stagehand who engaged in a fight with Christopher Reeve’s character in the year 1912.

According to his friend Betty Hoeffner, who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter, Swan passed away on Wednesday after a protracted fight with cancer at his home in Rolling Prairie, Indiana. Swan also played additional lawmen in the films Who’s That Girl (1987) and Mo’ Money (1992), as well as a Canadian Mountie in Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables (1987) and a bloodied deputy in Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers (1994). Both of these films were directed by Brian De Palma.
