Peggy’s life was a testament to love, family, and community, and her memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her. Born as the eighth of nine children to Laurence and Irma Whelan, Peggy’s early years were filled with the warmth of a large and loving family.

She attended St. Ann’s grade school, where she grew up surrounded by the teachings of faith, kindness, and compassion. As she progressed through her education, Peggy’s potential became evident, leading her to graduate from Girls Central High in the Class of ’57, where she nurtured lifelong friendships. Peggy’s pursuit of higher education brought her to Farrell Academy in Chicago, where she honed her skills and laid the foundation for a remarkable future. Armed with her newfound knowledge, Peggy returned to Butte to embark on her professional journey.

For five years, Peggy worked at Mr. Rich’s Salon, where her charismatic personality and warm demeanor made her a beloved member of the community. During this time, fate intervened and brought Peggy closer to her future life partner, James P. Maloney. Jim, the brother of Peggy’s dear friend Mary Ann, became the love of her life, and they soon exchanged vows, beginning a beautiful journey together that would span nearly six decades.

In their life together, Peggy and Jim experienced the joys and challenges of raising three children, creating a home filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. As a devoted wife and mother, Peggy dedicated herself to her family’s happiness, nurturing a loving atmosphere that extended beyond the walls of their home. In addition to her family life, Peggy also shared her incredible talent as a singer with the Note-A-Belles, a cherished group within her church community.

Her beautiful voice and passion for music brought solace, joy, and inspiration to those who were fortunate enough to hear her sing. Peggy’s involvement with the Note-A-Belles not only enriched her life but also the lives of many others who had the pleasure of experiencing her performances. Throughout her 84 years of life, Peggy was a living example of strength, resilience, and grace.
