Born on May 1, 1931, on the vibrant South Side of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Ernie was the second son of the late Erwin and Olga (Kolenda) Witalis.

In 1949, Ernie graduated from South Side High School, where he excelled in various artistic endeavors, setting the stage for an illustrious career ahead. In 1952, with the Korean War raging, Ernie answered the call of duty and was drafted into the U.S. Army. During his service, he joined the 7th Infantry Medical Battalion, a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (M.A.S.H unit). As a dedicated and compassionate individual, Ernie selflessly contributed to the well-being of his fellow servicemen, providing much-needed medical support and care during the challenging times of war.
After his honorable discharge from the military, Ernie returned to his beloved Pittsburgh and began a new chapter in his life.
